There are whole Instagram pages dedicated to mocking consultants (my apologies, I don’t have an Instagram to share these pages!)
There are entire books about the industry's failures, including Mariana Mazzucato’s excellent book, The Big Con.
And every week, another headline appears about management consultancies doing inadequate, and sometimes indefensible, work.
Are these criticisms fair? Most of the time, yes.
But for every bad story, there are hundreds of positive ones. The very best consultants see the world differently. They solve complex problems. They design human-centred solutions. They bring people together in ways that move things forward. They make progress possible.
Integrity as a Daily Decision
What these consultants share is a value: Integrity - doing the right thing rather than the easy thing.
Every decision you make, every piece of work you submit, and every billable hour offers a moment to do the right thing. These moments shape who you become as a consultant.
As consultants, it really is a privilege to do work that influences people’s lives, and sometimes, how entire societies operate. If we do this work with integrity, even if we still fall short, at least we did our best to do the right thing.
